But most humans aren’t either. We keep comparing LLMs to the top 1% or 0.1% in a given field and laughing because, well, they can’t do the tasks the top in a given field can do.

But LLM are handily crushing your average person at cognitive tasks. And yes, an LLM is crushing the experts in areas outside of their field. For example, an LLM can read a contract and run circles around Alex or Tyler. And an LLM can take a stats problems and run circles around Alex and Tyler. Ditto for medicine. And software. And electrical engineer. Mechanical engineering. Civil engineering.

There is a very good discussion in the rest of the comments about the strengths and limits of both LLMs and humans and what is intelligence and how far being in the world and having desires is relevant.
